Why is June Gay Pride month?

LGBTQ Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall uprising. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in NYC’s Greenwich Village, arresting patrons for, among other things, not wearing three articles of gender-appropriate clothing (as required by a local ordinance at the time). Patrons fought back, and the event became a watershed in gay history.

With the growth of the Gay Pride movement, symbols such as pink triangles, intended by the Nazis as badges of shame, became badges of honour and the rainbow flag came as a symbol to celebrate the beauty in diversity.

Throughout the month of June, communities in the U.S. and many other nations hold events celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identities, often collectively known as Gay Pride or LGBTQ Pride.
