Hosting a Virtual Seder During a Pandemic

Dear readers,

Hopefully, you are all in good health.

On April 02 there are 5,552 people registered in Belgium that are infected with the novel coronavirus who are receiving treatment in Belgian hospitals.
That there are only 1,143 deaths of the CoViD-19 virus at the moment is thanks to the exceptional precautions that the government has taken and which a large part of the population adheres to.

The coming week brings us, what in normal circumstances would be the busiest time for gatherings, in our effort to remember how God has liberated us, and to make sure that the younger generation would come aware how we always should remember how God Helps and Guides His People.

14 Nisan is normally the Day of The Memorial Meal.
This year that shall be different from all other years.

In Lockdown times, best not to meet too many people and to keep social distance, nowhere in Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal shall there be an open public Memorial Meal or Pesach Seder.

While you might not be able to physically gather around the seder table this Passover, do not forget that you can come together online.

Check out our 10 tips for creating a meaningful and fun seder experience for your family and friends, near and far.

  1. Use the same Haggadah.

You could make and can use a Haggadah you could send out by e-mail beforehand and/or screen-share it with your guests, or encourage everyone to print their own copy.

  2. Designate an e-Moses.

It can be very helpful to pick someone to lead the virtual seder. Make sure this person has experience successfully using Zoom, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, Skype, etc..

He can play Moshe and let us remember how Moshe ditched his desert aesthetic and returned to the Egyptian palace to deliver God’s message, with the help of his brother and hype man, Aaron.

Telling the exodus story he may not forget to bring forth how Moshe spoke about God commands and how God clapped back at the Egyptians. Children perhaps can have drawings made of the pathway formed between the walls of water and the Israelites who made it to the other side without harm.

  3. Make a “seating and speaking chart.”

This year there can best not swapped places. Best is to have everybody all night using the same place at the table, and if possible having enough distance between each household member.

But this year we should also account for the virtual seated next speaker. Figure out ahead of time who is going to read what. Throughout the seder, text the person you’d be sitting next to.  Be careful when all speakers are on there shall be too much echo and everything could become too chaotic. Therefore, let everybody stay muted and follow an order of speaking plus having put up an arm or (funny) sign requesting to speak.

  4. Maintain that there are no excuses for why people can’t attend.A danger of such critical times as these, is that people come a bit lazy or like to avoid their religious obligations.
Unless, you know, they don’t have internet and/or a device to connect to it. Anyone can be part of your Passover experience.
  5. Have a practice run.The organiser best has several contacts beforehand with those who would take care of the surprises. Also, send instructions for accessing your virtual platform of choice ahead of time so nobody holds up the seder by not knowing their Wi-Fi or other password. For those who do not have their computer enough secured and therefore had best their camera taped, they have to be encouraged to take the stickers or tape off their cameras.
  6. Eat and drink with measure spread over the long time of gatheringAs usual at a seder have the different courses interrupted by animated talks, readings from Scripture and prayers.
  7. Work with what you have.

With all the panic shopping, it can be intimidating to venture out to get everything you need. That’s OK. Get what you can and improvise the rest.
Our people have survived greater quandaries with a little ingenuity and determination. If you can’t get matzah, cut some cardboard into squares or large circles (you can even put dots on them with a marker for texture, but do not consume—this is purely decorative). Swap out sriracha for horseradish. Use literally anything green. Squish trail mix into a charoset-like paste.Use a regular plate as a stand-in for a seder plate. It’s the thought that counts.
  8. Bring a little Purim to Passover.

Never forget to make the long evening pleasant enough or entertaining enough to the children. Remember this night should be a night of remembering and giving it further to the next generation.Nobody would be against making some good fun and nobody would object to have people being dressed up as Moses, Aaron, Miriam, etc.Got kids? Great, they can be the frogs. Or the lice. It depends how stressed they’re making you.
Got teens? Do the whole seder using Snapchat filters, then do a TikTok dance break in the middle of the seder for added social media cred. But only if, like, you know the choreo.
  9. A night different from all other nightsAlso do not forget that 14 Nisan is ‘super special’.Laugh a little hysterically and cry only a tad when you get to the Four Questions and someone has to ask, “Why is this night different from all other nights?”
  10. A Liberation to celebrate

Do your best, have fun and remember that though we are in isolation to protect ourselves, friends, families and fellow human beings everywhere, we are still free to be Jewish or Jeshuaist and celebrate our heritage and salvation by the Highest and Strongest!

Let us not forget to show our love to God by remembering what He has done and still does, and let us show our love to others by taking enough precautions to keep everybody safe and in good health. Even when we might be very isolated in our own cosy home, let us feel the union with brothers and sisters all over the world, and let our prayers be with them all.

Please pray:

I will seek to make this world a better place, for all people, today and tomorrow. To this, in their memory, I pledge myself. Ani ma’amin. Am Yisrael chai.

As you come to the end of the seder, remember that this uncertainty, while it already feels like 40 years of wandering in the desert, is temporary. The Israelites made it eventually. So will we.

Next year, in person!

For 2020:

Keep safe and well, having a lovely Passover seder.

People with extraordinary amounts of determination

This is your thought of the day:

Great people are simply ordinary people
with extraordinary amounts of determination.

‘I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’.
Then I said: ‘Here am I! Send me’.’

Isaiah 6:8

How to Live Beyond the Ordinary

On her other blog, today’s guest-writer Nezel Yurong, an aspiring yogi and mother of two boys, wrote already in “Purposive Ninja Virtual Professional” about qualities we can acquire to make our life as enjoyable as possible.

We should know that our mindset is very important for the way how our life is going to develop. We should also know it is essential to have the right attitude to reach our goal in life. As such we should be very well aware that everything starts with a positive mindset.

She reminds her readers to

Believe that you can achieve the goals you set for yourself. Obstacles are inevitable. Whatever they may be, just have the faith and determination that you can overcome them. {Purposive Ninja Virtual Professional}

And repeats the same call we can not warn enough people to be persistent, continuing to try to get to their goal, never to give up.

Though we have to be careful Nezel warns

Do not push too hard on people or on yourself. You may make it slow according to your capacity; just keep moving forward. {Purposive Ninja Virtual Professional}

To do that we often need a lot of patience.

According to Beverly Sills, “there are no shortcuts to places worth going.” Get into the mindset that the wait will be worth it. Always take massive action. And remember that great things take time. {Purposive Ninja Virtual Professional}

Everybody shall encounter enough people who want to stop them dreaming, or even worse stop them reaching their goal. whatever the cause may be, a.o. jealousy, hear what they say and how they say it, but let it not drag you down. Look around in the world and find the interesting people who can inspire you or coach you and help you develop further in an ever changing world where you want to be receptive to and to be willing to make use of the new technologies.

 Adjust your sails to the different weathers of your journey. Keep on learning. And have an open mind to possibilities and opportunities. {Purposive Ninja Virtual Professional}

Our guest-writer recognises the good thing with life is that we are all born ordinary and we all can bring gifts to offer to the world from the day we were born. We may come into this world as a nobody and than have to work ourselves up onto that ladder so many expect so much.

When we grow up we may encounter experiences which might embarrass us much. ({Making Most of the Gap from a Nobody to Somebody}) On our way we can come to sit in an unproductive environment and seeking for something that gives more meaning and purpose to life. It’s possible we come to face weeks of soul searching, discovering we need to let go of some things before we can successfully embark on a new journey, which on many different occasions we shall confronted with.

Often a big problem people then face when they come on such ‘crossroad’ or ‘turning points’ is that they have difficulties with the confrontation and the changes they perhaps have to make.

They need to shake off the dust from their feet. No matter others might have been born with a silver spoon in their mouth, that does not make them extraordinary nor should let us feel sorry for ourselves.

We should remember

Being extraordinary is an inward thing. It is a journey. It is a choice.

Let us never forget our better self, believing in the self, getting to nurture the gifts which are given from birth.

As Richard Dawson said,

“Be nice to each other. You can make a whole day a different day for everybody.”

Nezel adds

If we want to be remembered or leave a lasting legacy, we have to muster all our strength to build up others.

We have to accept whatever the present puts in our table. The present is just the way it is. If there is something we don’t like in the present moment, we have to accept it, then tweak something that would promise us a favorable future.

Living beyond the ordinary

I read somewhere of someone asking how to make her life extraordinary. Is your life ordinary? Mine too. The good thing with life is we are all born ordinary. Yes, others may have been born with a silver spoon in their mouth, but that does not make them extraordinary. Outwardly, perhaps. They live in huge abode than anybody else, do not need to clean their toilet like anybody else, and even have bodyguards and assistants who are always attentive to their every need.

Still, those things do not make someone extraordinary. Being extraordinary is an inward thing. It is a journey. It is a choice. Media may have its definition about being extraordinary by the way some things or people present themselves. That is why many aspire to be great, famous and wealthy in order to become extraordinary. Worse, they do all means whether acceptable or not just to get…

Your Future

Why is it so many people wait such a long time before daring to take the steps to change. Mostly they are too much under pressure of those around them.

We should dare to think and handle for ourselves and look for the right way to find the right path for life.

At certain points in the year, like when Spring has arrived it is not bad to think about it and to do a big clean-up.

*

Take action now — today — + step into your future = not some far off time = right here, right now, in the very next moment => You are in the right place!

  • Don’t put off stepping into your future because you think you don’t have the time
  • don’t fall for the illusion that tomorrow or the next week or next month your schedule will clear + you’ll have plenty of time to pursue your dreams
  • this is the best time > Right now = moment = best time to step into your future. Do it; go for it!

Your homework = have schedule in one hand + your goals + dreams in your other hand

*

When you wait for some one or something you should take care you wait for the right thing or for the right one.

Find Inspiration and Follow Your Dreams

When a person has found him or herself and can say “I am” than he or she can start the next step, looking for what the “I am” would like to be, would like to become. When there are the dreams than the “I am” should come to realise that those dreams only can be made working when the “I am” is prepared to go into them and to do something positive with them. Then after the knowledge of “I am” has to come the power of the will to say “I can”.

+

To remember:

  • Inspiration = icing on a cake => to give an idea, a thought, a wish or a dream
  • idea, a thought, a wish or a dream =  added element to make reality
  • add inspiration + focus to it
  • opportunities > out there
  • possibilities = endless
  • the sky is the limit
  • self-doubt and negativity => gets in the way of those moments of creativity from blossoming into something wonderful
  • Everyone > capability of doing great things
  • >> Focus, drive and determination mixed in with knowledge, inspiration and potential => make a person unstoppable in their individual quest.
  • all have potential
  • Remind yourself > reason why set out on mission
  • ==> take positive action everyday
  • Have patience
  • allow natural progression
  • Your goals and dreams = definite possibilities and they are there to be acted upon and nurtured -> Never lose sight of that.
  • always work towards your dreams
  • set goals + know where you are heading
  • crucial to stay positive and search out only those that will offer encouragement and positive and constructive advice
  • stay on your own path to achieve what it is you are after
  • Never give up on your dream even though the road gets bumpy from time to time along the way.
  • Be excited + Be dedicated to the follow-through process.
  • put forth the effort
  • Believe in yourself, find inspiration and enjoy the experience of following your dream. = key to success in life

  • Believe In Yourself (timemanagementhelpfulhints.wordpress.com)
Believe in yourself no matter what other people think. We should all decide that we can do, be and have whatever we want in this world and the only person who can get you there is You!
  • Believe In Yourself (timetocreateabetterlife.wordpress.com)
Have realistic expectations of what you can achieve and then aim a little higher. We can always achieve more than we think we can.
Listen to feedback, and remember, some people will try to tear you down while others will provide golden tips to support you on your journey.
  • Do you have faith? (sherwinsampson.wordpress.com)
Faith is you setting dreams and goals for yourself, hoping and believing in it with all that you are. Taking action and doing whatever must be done, as if those dreams actually exist. Set your goals high enough to scare you, that way when you achieve them-you by default have raised the bar in your life. And when all of life goes rye, you have trust because your faith is in God.
  • Fight for what is good (dailytwocents.com)

Fight for what is good, by loving the weak and incurable in society. The problems of the world shall be solved when we love each other, see the next person as a friend, work hard to make those around us happy.

Fight for what is good, by holding high all the great virtues of life. Love, patience, kindness and the rest. For there are no laws against these.

  • Start working on your dreams now! (newera.com.na)
As a young person going through life with struggles but you still have faith and hope that one day something will change, you don’t give up on anything that you started no matter how hard things may turn out to be. I consider you as a worrier, a gladiator who is fighting an economical war, a gladiator who believes in him/herself.  Your heart is the most important tool you have. It is not your experience, knowledge, or skills. It is your heart that matters most of all. Don’t allow just everyone to have access to it. It’s your heart that creates an idea and you live on it. Guard your heart with all your might because everything you create comes from it. “What’s your purpose?” Ask yourself this question.  Answering it will change your life instantly. It’s hard to know where you’re going unless you know who you are. To create your life roadmap, first identify and prioritise your values. Doing so will give clarity on what you need in life as opposed to what you simply want. Believe in yourself and give up on things that you know you cannot control and put your focus on what you know you can be able to control. If we cannot risk achieving our dreams, than we go back to our ordinary lives.

Disscusion Questions

It would be nice if “Everyone has at least one person available always to hear their problems, troubles, mistakes, secrets and even opinions. ” but we are afraid we can find lots of people who are feeling lonely and who do not find somebody around them to whom they can tell the ‘closest’ things to. Even many people who have lots of Facebookfriends today can not feel happiness because they do not really feel they can have a very close connection with somebody else. At the time when social Media is such a hype and everybody seems to be constantly busy with updating their social status, we see that a lot of it is a flush of air.

Having all the magical tools which can spread photo’s in a few seconds make it even worse in this world, because many people have found a weapon in it to tease and even worse bully others with their messages and photo’s been placed on the internet.

All tat social media action makes that lots of people have lost their trust in certain people around them.

But each of us can make a difference. Even when liking to use Facebook and other social gadgets we should be conscious not to misuse the modern tools to gossip, but using it more to show our good will to help others and to be ready for them.
We should do proof to others that they can rely on us, because we are trustworthy and standing ready to be helpful for those in need. People are right to fear the ‘Gossiping‘ which has increased so much, and we should give a clear sign to others who try to do such a thing, that we are not served by that and that we do not want to hear.

When we do hear somebody judging somebody else we should give a clear signal that it is not up to man to judge the other, and that before something is insinuated the person has to be very sure that what he or she wants to tell is founded on truth and not on gossip.

Notice:

Power and determination = most important qualities => make you a good leader

leaders need to be strong so that they can be obeyed and followed but they also need to be flexible and friendly with other people so that they can have good relations, can be trusted by the members led and finally can be loved and defended no matter what happens.

A good leader = determined + has power + is also weak + sympathetic

good lives are made so by discipline.

=> keep the laws + law makers

  • 4 Tips On Social Media Use (brosix.com)
Social media today is just as inescapable as the television had become after the radio. Everyone everywhere has access to Facebook, Twitter, and the rest of the social networks that the Internet can offer. While social media use has brought a whole lot of good, it can also bring negativity, when used wrongly.

It’s nice to express our thoughts, or to have an opinion, especially in causes that you feel strongly about. However, if your opinions have a tendency to be controversial or unpopular, and you don’t want to attract haters, it’s really best to keep them to yourself.

for those interactions that will only sap your energy, it’s best to just ignore things.

The Internet doesn’t yet run on Oracle but it could, and I am strongly tempted to suggest that maybe it should. Not because Oracle software is the best solution available but because Oracle is large enough to weather all sorts of economic storms. The worst possible thing that can happen to the Internet has happened many times already: people develop software that is widely distributed and then suddenly they vanish, or they move on, and everyone who adopted the freeware is left vulnerable and exposed to the inevitable exploits that come along. I remember when I switched to Qmail because it could not be exploited by email spammers.
  • What I learned from my friendships (fourfeetnine.com)
I did love attention when I was younger, whether from girls or boys and I’d do funny or cute things or talk a lot or tell jokes to get it. Ironically, that craving faded the older I am.  Nobody likes being ignored but I’m content to be on the sidelines or not be in the middle telling jokes.

But I still always remember what she said.  And to that extent I consciously remind myself not to be too self-absorbed when I talk to friends (because I can be exactly that) and tell myself don’t talk so much about myself WTF and listen to them more.

Nice social media posts engage and build your audience, while spammy posts make you look stupid, ignorant, or just plan lazy. Spammy posts might also get you banned from social networks.

Social media is a community. If you want something from someone, it’s best to start by giving them something. So, when you Follow someone on Twitter, RTing one of their posts increases the chances they’ll follow you back. If you disagree with your government, non-violent organised protests and simply not participating in the system you disagree with (such as not going to work or school) are possibly effective actions to take.
