The movement of protest and revolt that has been affecting the country for a week, was triggered by the sudden decision of the authorities to double the price of gas and gasoline; as soon as this announcement protest demonstrations of workers and unemployed began to take place on Sunday morning, January 2, in the oil city of Janaozen, in the west of the country (Mangystau region) (1).

During the day the protest actions (rallies, sit-ins, etc.) spread to the nearby large port city of Aktau to demand the withdrawal of the increases – or the doubling of wages!
