Watchful Vultures

Dave Williams

Canoeing in the swamp,
we saw three vultures
resting on a tree branch
high overhead.

As they watched us,
I imagined them saying,
“After the panther,
crocodile, and python
are finished
their meals of you,
we’ll have a turn
and pick your bones clean.”
