Memories are like the perennials in our gardens; they grow deep roots, hibernate and when conditions are right, they break through the surface and bloom. It may be a whiff of a scent on a breeze, an action you take, an expression you use, a turn of phrase you hear, perhaps a photograph you see, or a walk around the garden, which produces the conditions for the memory to float into your consciousness and blossom.

We have many perennial memories planted in our own garden and when they bloom, the memories also come to the surface. There is the patriarch of the garden – he never blossoms, but every year grows taller and watches over the yard. During the winter solstice we place a rustic angel among the upper boughs and scatter walnuts through the lower branches for our furry friends. The cedar, was planted in memory…
